As far as thoughtful and sentimental gifts go, you can’t get much more personal than perfume. Whether it’s for yourself or someone close, there’s plenty of brand new fragrances to choose from this season – all of which have the potential to become a future signature scent. (Kudos to you, if you’re the nose behind your best mates new “forever” spritz).
New on the block (and making the most noise) is Valentino’s Voce Vita, fronted by Lady Gaga. The messaging behind the fragrance is all about using your own voice, but rather than a loud, gutsy fragrance, the scent is quietly powerful – soft, balanced, feminine and destined to be a crowd-pleaser. A woody floral, the base notes are made up of vanilla and tonka bean, the heart comprises white flowers (orange blossom and gardenia) and the top is lightly citrusy with bergamot and mandarin. Already the perfume has notched up a five star rating and over 513 reviews on Bootssince it launched at the beginning of September, with customers agreeing it’s sweet and musky without feeling overpowering.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a new release from Jo Malone. This year, the brand’s festive scent, Midnight Musk and Amber, feels like a departure from the single note fragrances we’re used to seeing. Rather than being able to pick out one or two notes, it’s a botanical, spicy and sensual blend of juniper, amber and musk. Created with the rip-roaring 20s in mind, it has a throw-back, vintage feel and a Gatsby-esque art-deco bottle. The unisex scent smells like swilling fragrant gin in a gimlet cocktail glass. A self-assured, alternative scent for nonconformists.

Floral lovers, Gucci’s latest Bloom Profumo Di Fiori, is a heady cloud of tuberose, jasmine and ylang ylang, grounded with musk, sandalwood and creamy woods. It’s a mellow honeysuckle scent that would work beautifully across spring and summer thanks to the sunny white flower scents, the soft touch of sandalwood warms it up for winter.
And, for those not wishing to stray too far from established favourites, this season dishes up a heavy dose of nostalgia from all four of the major fragrance houses. Guerlain, Chanel, Chloe and Dior have each given their best-sellers (Shalimar, Coco Mademoiselle, Chloe Eau de Parfum and J'Adore, respectively) a modern millennial makeup, bringing them bang up to date for 2020.
